The Spaniards arrived in the 16th century and the island was christened after the the greek mythology legend of the Gorgons. They thought that the dangerous currents and rough weather that often surrounded the island depicted the nasty Gorgons who had the ability to petrify anyone who met their eyes.<\/p><p>The island was a prison for the 19th and early 20th century, it was called the &#8216;Alcatraz of South America&#8217;. Its location and the deadly waters surrounding it made it nearly impossible to attempt an escape. The island is only accessible by boat, which means that you first have to travel to Guapi, a city on the Pacific coast of Colombia. You can reach Guapi by plane from cities such as Cali or Bogot\u00e1. From Guapi, it is around two to three hours by boat to Isla Gorgona. Note that the journey may vary depending on the weather and sea conditions.<\/p><p>It is important to note that visiting the island requires a permit from the national park. Between June and November, you can marvel at these giant marine mammals.<\/p><p><strong>Snorkeling and diving<\/strong>: The island is known for its impressive coral reefs and rich marine fauna. You can see a variety of fish, sea turtles, rays and even hammerhead sharks.
