Arabian nights in Peru

Huacachina

24th of May 2014 the day of the Champions league final between Ream and Atletico Madrid and for us it was the day to go to Huacachina. Huacachina is located approximately 5 kilometers from city of Ica in the southwest of Peru. The Highlight of the trip to Huacachina is definitely the Laguna de Huacachina, an oasis in the desert situated on the pacific coast.

 How to get there :

Once again we had to get up early and I simply hate getting up early but if this means I can visit a new place it makes it a little bit easier form e to handle and eventually we wanted to take advantage of the day because we unfortunately only calculated a daytrip in our plans.  After struggling to get out of bed at 6 in the morning we made ourselves on the way to the bus terminal of the bus company Cruz del Sur in the Av. Javier Prado 1190 , La Victoria. The bus ride to Ica takes roughly 5 hours and costs between 25 and 30 Dollars. From Ica you can either take a moto or a normal taxi in order to get to the Laguna de Huacachina. After a long ride in a fortunately very comfortable bus we finally reached Ica. With a cap we proceeded by what felt like 50 degrees to the lagoon.

The oasis in the middle of the desert looks almost painted or like from a fairy tale of Arabian nights. It was very impressing to see an Oasis in a desert in South America. I always thought this kind of oasis could only be found in the Middle East. But what to do at the oasis but to enjoy the view? Usually I’m not the adventurous kind of guy who needs shit loads of activities all the time. For me most of the time it is enough to just suck in the landscape and enjoy the different colors and smells in a new place. But this time I made an exception and let myself convince to have a little bit of an adventure.

Activities:

In the Banana’s Adventure Hostel, which definitely would have been my first choice for an overnight stay we booked a trip in some dune buggies. Instead of just driving up and down the dunes, which is already, more exciting than a ride on a roller coaster, sand boarding is inclusive. Unfortunately the sand boarding was a little disappointing. I love snowboarding but sand boarding can’t be compared. Making a turn in the sand almost seemed impossible with these wooden boards. But still it was pretty much fun. After walking around the lagoon and a quick dinner we already had to head back to Lima. If I go there again I will definitely stay overnight to watch the stars in the dunes.

As souvenirs we brought tons of sands with us. I think I still find sand in some places nowadays
Result of the champions league final: 3:1 for Real Madrid but we couldn’t care less because we were still trying to get the sand out of our ears.
